It’s been 50 years since My Melody debuted with Kuromi having her name known to the world 20 years ago. To celebrate the occasion, news of an anime about the two aforementioned characters is to be expected.
An anime featuring Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi, which is the exact name of the title, will premiere this July according to Anime News Network. The animation will be in stop-motion format.
The anime takes place in Maryland where the titular characters live.
Netflix Japan uploaded a 10-second clip on their YouTube channel featuring the adorable Sanrio icons and the anime announcement.
Staff for the upcoming anime includes Tomoki Misato (Pui Pui Molcar) as director and Shūko Nemoto, who will be in charge of script writing. The production will be handled by Toroku and Wit Studio.
In 2005, Studio Comet produced the Onegai My Melody which spawned multiple seasons in the following years with the last one finishing in 2009. A film inspired by the character and anime franchise released in Japan in 2012 titled Onegai My Melody Yū and Ai.
A short anime series titled Kuromi’s Pretty Journey was uploaded on YouTube and TikTok in February 2023. The English version was streamed in July 2023. A recent short anime series called Kuromi’s Pretty Journey Kuromi’s Pretty Journey ~Hachamecha! Multiverse Dasshutsu!~ (Chaotic! The Great Multiverse Escape!) premiered on YouTube last Halloween. An English dub was also released at the same time.
My Melody and Kuromi debuts on Netflix July 2025.
