Dorohedoro is one of Mappa’s hidden gems that was unfortunately overshadowed by the existence of their popular shonen anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan. Thankfully, a sequel is in the works with more information recently revealed.
Anime Trending reported that the sequel of Dorohedoro, the anime adaptation of Q Hayashida’s dark fantasy manga, has just unveiled the second teaser visual. The visual confirms the return of Yuichiro Hayashi (Attack on Titan: The Final Season) as director for the new season alongside a 2025 release date. Additionally, Mappa will be returning to produce the sequel.
The visual is colorfully covered with storyboards from the upcoming season. The image itself was posted on the official X account of the anime.
Aside from Hayashi, the staff from the first season includes Hiroshi Seko (Jujutsu Kaisen) who was in charge of series composition. Other staff consist of character designer Tomohiro Kishi (91 Days) and 3DCG director Yuki Nomoto (Yasuke). It’s not confirmed if any of them will return to work on the sequel.
The two main characters, Caiman and Nikaido, are both voiced by Wataru Takagi and Reina Kondō respectively.
Dorohedoro’s manga was published by Shogakukan and was serialized from 2000 to 2018 with a total of 23 tankoubon volumes. The English version of the manga was published by Viz Media and described the story as such:
“In a city so dismal it’s known only as “the Hole,” a clan of Sorcerers have been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious “experiments” in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they’re hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they’ll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of “cleaners” into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.”
The first season of the anime debuted on Netflix in January 2020 with the sequel announced last January in 2024.
