Moana 2 is poised to likely hit streaming services here next month, but ahead of that, it’s passed a rather large milestone, that being Disney’s first film passing $1 billion at the global box office this year. It marks the third film, however, to join the billionaire club in the last 12 months, with Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine snagging the other spots.
As reported by Variety, the film generated around $445 million domestically, with a slight bump at the international box office to the tune of $567 million. The film previously hit theaters around Thanksgiving, with a solid run and a record to boot. This record was $225 million in the span of five days.
Disney already held that record with 2019’s Frozen 2, so it wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things until you realize just how big of a leap that was, as the 2019 sequel, in that same time frame, made $125 million. Additionally, critic and fan reception helped it grow further.
Beyond the sequel, though, we have a slightly more controversial project, that being a live action adaptation of the animated hit. One where Dwayne Johnson remains as his role of demigod Maui, just this time in a bodysuit.
The live action adaptation is poised for a 2026 release. Meanwhile, it’s suspected that Moana 2 will hit Disney Plus sometime in February.
