Ubisoft’s free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, which formerly donned the Tom Clancy name, is shutting down alongside the two studios that worked on it. The market was simply way too competitive and it couldn’t compete with the others.
Announced on Ubisoft’s blog, chief studios and portfolio director Marie-Sophie de Waubert shared that development will cease. Season 3 will be released, but everything from in-game purchases to new players are already discontinued. Game executive producer, Mark Rubin, shared on Twitter more details surrounding refunds. Ultimate Founder’s Pack purchasers should receive a refund as well as anyone who purchased anything within the last 30 days.
XDefiant was the victim of several delays before landing into players hands back in May with a very divisive crowd. Ultimately, it was a solid game but lacked anything to make it stand on its own, so it isn’t too shocking Ubi would pull the plug on the game, though, it is shocking that it only took it six months.
In addition to the game shuttering on June 3, 2025, Ubisoft announced its San Francisco and Osaka studios are closing while also winding down its Sydney production site.
