Independent Parisian studio Yummy Games has released the launch trailer for their debut game Project Tower in the lead-up to its release today, January 6.
Project Tower is a third-person shooter game set in a sci-fi universe where an alien race called the Hiks have invaded Earth and captured human survivors. You play as one of these prisoners and must ascend a tower designed by the Hiks filled with deadly aliens and puzzles to solve in order to earn your freedom from this nightmare. The launch trailer offers an interesting look at the game’s narrative, in particular the voiceover from the leader of the human resistance against the Hiks. It sounds like you’re not the only one alive in this tower, and there are still a few looking to reignite some semblance of hope.
In addition, the launch trailer also offers segments of gameplay. This includes the aforementioned gunplay, a sneak peak of a few insane boss fights you’ll experience, and perhaps the most interesting element of Project Tower’s gameplay — morphing. The trailer shows the protagonist transforming into different monsters each with their own abilities. For example, in the trailer we see one monster with the power of telekinesis and a trident, whereas another monster, who strangely looks like a Xenomorph, appears to be able to shoot out fireballs. The developers have stated on their website that you can use the morphing ability “to get out of all sorts of situations,” what exactly that means remains to be seen but it is definitely an interesting feature to explore.
What’s most impressive is how beautiful the game looks. Project Tower has been developed on the Unreal Engine 5 and looks incredible, there is so much detail in the environment and character models. This is a true testament to Yummy Games whose studio is only comprised of 4 people. It’s clear that their drive and passion to provide a unique experience for players has paid off. The question remains whether this indie sci-fi shooter can become a January hit with players. We will have that answer soon enough.
Project Tower releases today, 6 January, on PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam.
