Ahead of the PlayStation brand’s 30th Anniversary coming next week, Sony announces a new milestone for their iconic second video game console.
As reported by VGC, Sony has announced on their website that its now 24-year-old game console has reached a new milestone of 160 million units sold. In fact, to this day the PlayStation 2 remains the best selling game console of all time. Nintendo holds the runner-up spots with the portable DS (released in 2005) at 154.02 million units and the Switch at 146.04 million units sold since March 2017.
Heading to Sony’s website here, Sony displays a curated timeline for each of their consoles as users scroll down the web pages, listing out their original release dates by region, how much units they sold, and various models/achievements including notable games. Additionally, each of Sony’s main consoles after the PS1 are also paired with an extra PlayStation system such as the PlayStation 2 with the PlayStation Portable. It’s in this page where Sony includes the 160 million PS2 sales figure.
Even before this new milestone, Sony has been preparing ahead of time to celebrate PlayStation’s anniversary landing next week on Tuesday December 3, which marks 30 years after the PlayStation’s Japanese launch. As early as September, they announced a Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Collection that includes the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro in the classic PS1 color scheme as well as other PS1-themed collectors items. This collection recently released on November 21 with a limited supply of 12,300 PS5 Pro bundles.
