Payday 3 developer Starbreeze isn’t enthused with the poor performance of its latest co-op shooter following the infinitely more successful Payday 2. The studio isn’t giving up, though, warning that there is no “simple recipe” to the situation.
As the studio says in its yearly earnings report (thanks, Game Developer), the Swedish game dev sees the value of the Payday franchise, stating not many studios are “blessed” with such a strong brand. During the last quarter, Payday 3’s 2013 precursor managed to keep a sizable 400,000 players during one month.
Payday 3 faced lackluster reception, with press (including PSX Extreme) giving it a mixed response, it also didn’t help that the game had a fair bit of bugs and server issues on launch, and the game just didn’t feel enough of an upgrade to really favor it over the previous game to many people. We’re sure it will continue to get more content akin to PD2, but we can’t be sure if it will stick around, as the market is getting really saturated with live-action online-only first-person co-op shooters.
Outside of this, though, Starbreeze also had an unnamed co-op Dungeons and Dragons game in production.
