A classic cheat code used in the Doom franchise — IDKFA — has been filed for trademark by Bethesda, adding fuel to the fire that some sort of new Doom is heading our way. This comes after rumors of an announcement come June.
The new trademark filing (reported by Eurogamer) held the notable cheat code from the franchise is under its ownership. Sure enough, the filing is legit and while trademark renewals are often nothing, completely new trademarks aren’t anything to scoff at, especially with the recent rumors.
We already knew a new Doom was in the works thanks to a document accidentally shared by Microsoft during the Activision Blizzard FTC court case, with a game titled Doom: Year Zero listed. Additionally, earlier this month, The Verge reported on the studio banking on “new game announcements lifting the Doom around Xbox.”
It’s pretty obvious that id Software is dying to get back into the Doom franchise after shying away from the IP since 2021’s Doom Eternal DLC, The Ancient Gods. While its fellow studios like MachineGames works on the Indiana Jones game and Arkane Lyon takes the reign on Marvel’s Blade, it just makes sense that the long-operating studio will keep its strengths at heart.
Unfortunately, some of the stuff listed on that document is destined to never happen — particularly, Ghostwire: Tokyo 2, which was on the table from Tango Gameworks, as was a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush.
