Following a bout of backlash over its title, indie developer Nightmare Forge has renamed it to Infestation: Origins. The intention behind the original name was highlighting the year — 1988 — that it takes place.
In an interview with Kotaku, it maintained that it was not aware that 88 is often attributed to neo-Nazism, but as a means to atone, it seems it’s changed the name. In a statement to IGN, it changed its name as soon as it was made aware of the additional meaning behind the number.
Nightmare Forge went on to apologize for its ignorance and strongly disavowed such behavior. Many are wary of the game itself as the studio’s quick upswing to create a new game utilizing the recently public domain Steamboat Willie seemed suspicious. Tack on that the studio is keeping the team’s identity a secret for the sake of privacy, and you have a small red flag.
Regardless, it comes out sometime this year and will follow the player confronting, running, and maintaining battery life as they deal with a mysterious infestation while being hunted by a demonic Steamboat Willie.
