Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, despite the lengthy list of regions that cannot purchase the game, has been marked as PlayStation’s fourth biggest Steam launch. Around 140 countries aren’t allowed to purchase the samurai game due to its PSN linking requirement.
Per SteamDB info, the PC version of Ghost tracks ahead of some of its more established IPs, particularly 2018’s God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered when it comes to its peak player count, which isn’t definitively at its peak, as it could very well go further over the weekend.
Developed by Nixxes Software, the PC porting studio under PlayStation Studios, in collaboration with Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut has both faced controversy over its PC release, as well praise. Controversially, the game is unavailable in many countries due to its pseudo-requirement to link your Steam profile with your PSN, the same requirement that Sony walked back on when the Helldivers 2 community pushed back on the idea.
At the time, Sucker Punch assured players that you won’t need to link your PSN if you just plan on adventuring in single-player, per PSX Extreme. That said, Steam and other game retailers were informing customers within countries that lack PSN that their pre-orders have been refunded. Meanwhile, gamers who try to access its Steam page in those countries find themselves on an error page.
What’s clear is while this is a successful launch, it’s gonna be restricted to how big it will get thanks to this requirement, which looks to be a standard for PlayStation games on PC.
