CD Projekt Red is finally finished with Cyberpunk 2077 after building it back up from its disastrous launch back in 2020. The game’s launch was so bad it led to a lot of backlash, lawsuits, and companies breaking refund policies to appease those unsatisfied with the state of the game.
As shared in its recent financial results, CDPR has pulled the last remaining developer of the fixed cyberpunk romp to work elsewhere. Full development of the game wound down following the release of Phantom Liberty, which has managed to keep the game relevant, win awards at 2023’s The Game Awards, and clawed its way to Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam. That said, due to the new — and only — expansion, more bug fixes were needed, so there was a skeleton crew working on the project.
The massive 2.0 patch revamped a lot of Night City, improved AI, and a new perk system. There was also 2.1, which while at a smaller scale, still had a lot of important features introduced, like the Metro system. Ever since, the rest of the patches have been mostly bug fixes, including the 2.12, which launched in February.
This doesn’t mean the world of Cyberpunk is done, considering not only are there Easter Eggs to be found, but also we do have Project Orion — or Cyberpunk 2 — to look out for. If we take it for the studio’s word, it sounds like features will appear in this next entry that didn’t make the cut in the original. It will also put more a focus on making life paths worth more than one playthrough.
