Capcom has been rather slow to adopt the controversial — yet normal, at this point — new price range for AAA games, but seemingly, depending on the success of Dragon’s Dogma 2, it might release more games at this price tag. To be clear, we don’t fully know if this game will be the de facto start of Capcom adopting this new price, but we have a hunch that if it bombs in sales, it might have sway on its future.
During its earnings Q&A session (via VGC), the developer acknowledged the increasing development costs and how it’s considering a price review. Much like Ubisoft, which started putting out $70 games with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Capcom is late to this price party, but it also believes despite this price tag, it considers Dragon’s Dogma 2 to be in the “million-selling class.”
It’s worth pointing out its CEO claimed video game prices are “too low” (via PSX Extreme), so it wouldn’t surprise us if more $70 games start popping up from the Japanese developer more frequently while offset with AA games or select AAAs at the $60 mark. We can think this is the developer testing the waters of a new price point, though, we highly doubt anything would change even if it fails to meet expectations when it releases on March 22.
