Team Ninja announced exciting details at the Game Awards about its upcoming Rise of the Ronin open-world action RPG, set in late 19th century Japan. The title launches on March 22, on the same day as Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Pre-orders go live beginning December 14 — per the PlayStation Blog — if you happen to be impatient (or Santa thinks you’ve been good enough to deserve it). The release date is bound to be a bit controversial, as Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of the most-anticipated RPG releases of the year. Looks like Team Ninja has full confidence in its game, and that sounds promising to us.
There will be a Standard Physical Edition ($69.99) and a Digital Deluxe Edition ($79.99) — the latter includes various bonuses like exclusive weapons and armor sets. It features Team Ninja’s own brand of action and combat, so expect more fast-paced Nioh-like combat. The combat comprises melee weapons like swords and spears, as well as ranged weapons like firearms and thrown weapons. A stealth mechanic is also present.
The game is set at the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate in late 1800s Japan and follows a Ronin protagonist and several anti-shogunate factions at war. Player choices will matter in how the protagonist aligns or clashes with story characters and factions. It features an open world that can be explored by horse and/or glider.
As fans of Ghost of Tsushima and Japan, we can tell you that we can’t get enough of this aesthetic. Let’s hope that Team Ninja surprises us with another great game. Ganbare!
