Nintendo has announced that online services for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are coming to an end. The tentative date is set for April 8, 2024.
With the shutdown of online services, there is a question about what will no longer be available. Luckily, Nintendo was able to provide that information on its support page. The shutdown affects online cooperative play, internet rankings, and data distribution. At the moment, updated data and previously purchased software will remain available.
The end of online services also encompasses the potential online compatibility of third-party-published games. Nintendo encourages fans to reach out to third-party publishers for further information.
We know this information thanks to the announcement by Nintendo. Also, don’t forget to merge eShop wallets if you haven’t, as when the Wii U and 3DS eShops closed in March 2023, Nintendo gave fans until March 11, 2024, to merge wallets. Failure to do so will result in a total loss of any funds that may have remained in the wallet.
This comes as an unfortunate confirmation of an even further loss of media, as some games offered as digital-only will no longer be available. This news comes following rumors (via TheGamer) that many retail stores like Walmart and Best Buy will no longer be carrying physical games starting at some point this year.
With the end of online services set for April 8, it is important to note that Nintendo mentioned that if there is an event that could make support complicated, that support may end sooner than expected.
