While the Oscars has a lot of award categories that it’s amassed in its century of operation, the Oscars is introducing a long-missed award starting in 2028.
Straight from the horse’s mouth on Twitter, The Academy announced that it will introduce Achievement in Stunt Design for its 100th event. The new award will be part of the Oscars in 2028 and will honor films from 2027.
In a joint statement on The Academy’s website from CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang, they acknowledge stunt design as an important part of filmmaking.
“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking. We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”
Frankly, it’s surprising that the award ceremony has been around this long and continued to snub film stunts until now. Regardless, it’ll be a while before we actually know more about the new category.
