After a fantastic technical presentation from PlayStation’s Mark Cerny, the biggest question in the room has been answered. The PlayStation 5 Pro will cost $700.
The technical presentation was uploaded to PlayStation’s YouTube channel, with more information revealed via a posting on PlayStation Blog. The main focal point in a lot of viewers minds though was the price tag. Many have voiced their opinions, mostly negative, on the exorbitant price.
The PS5 Pro boasts various improvements over the base model PS5, which include an upgraded GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), a 2TB SSD, advanced ray tracing, and AI-Driven upscaling. Another enhancement that the PS5 Pro will include is game boosting, effectively enhancing PS4 and PS5 games with improved graphics and stability. Along with this is an upgrade to the new standard for wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi 7.
It’s understandable where some consumers may be coming from in regards to the price point of the PS5 Pro, but they should also consider that Sony is trying to rival gaming PCs at this point. Some of the higher-end graphics cards can run well over the price of the PS5 Pro alone, and while the system doesn’t have the multi-functionality of a PC, the price point is something more realistic for today’s economy and time. Many point out the cost of a PS4 Pro being $400 at launch, but accounting for inflation of today’s times, that same system would now launch at a price of $524.
Now the fact that Sony is charging separately for the vertical stand and a disc drive is another thing entirely.
What do you think? Is the price of the new PS5 outrageous? Let us know in the comments.
